The "let's all try to get along" approach failed America miserably after Barack Obama was elected president. Perhaps, still in shock from the Bush/Cheney regime, folks south of the 49th were not watching nor speaking up as Obama simply picked up and continued where Bush left off. With unprecedented Democrat juice across a powerful spectrum of American governmental institutions, instead of invoking that power to affect the "change" he promised, Obama fell back to a "let's all get along" approach - a choice Republicans are now using against him in the current presidential race. So, now with all hearts and minds focused on defeating Stephen Harper and kicking his conservative gang back out on the streets (a post Kim Campbell outcome comes to mind), is ANYONE paying critical attention to Thomas Mulcair?

Much to the suprise of Canadians and even many Members of Parliament, with 800 cases so far of potential electoral wrong doing which merit serious investigation (according to Canada's Chief Electoral Officer), Elections Canada CANNOT render an election void and null! Even if the suspected criminal activities are determined to be true, Harper's grip over Canadian democracy can only be challenged in the courts. And we all know how expedient the courts are. How many more legally-binding bad deals can Harper sign Canada into while we wade through democratic red tape? Some Canadians are not prepared to wait, and believe that only direct democracy will prevail in the conservative war against humanity.

Oops. Using the handy cover of "global market meltdown" is not going to wash with the majority of Canadians who saw through the "faux conservatism" rhetoric of Harper's gang and recognized it as the pro-global-corporate trade agenda it represented. Now, six years down the Harper rabbit hole, even Stephen Harper's Conservatives are projecting losses. But, just as in a global market (which is far from free), value and pricing has little to do with local realities. So if the rest of the world is melting down into economic chaos, with austerity as the only solution, then why shouldn't Canada "start getting with the program" (whether we really need to or not)? At least that's the type of wool Harper is trying to pull over Canadians' eyes with his latest budget!

They say that a person held hostage and kept in constant crisis will invariably identify with, if not develop an attachment to, their captor/aggressor. Such seems to be the case with mainstream corporate media after Stephen Harper's 2012 budget was presented. "It could have been a lot worse" seems to be the common message/mantra. That may be a valid perspective for those who are financially insulated from, or subordinate to, the Conservative Agenda, but for MOST Canadians, the fact is that "things have been unacceptably bad for far too long already"!

Mulroney mentioned an "adjustment period" which would follow his American/Canadian trade deal. Well, conservative "economics", are more like "wreakonomics", and they have certainly had enough time to prove their merits in principle. Since Mulroney's selling out to the US, and Harper's selling out to the global corporatism, the disconnect between promise and reality is too big to believe any more. Corporations of the largest magnitude have long ago perfected the art of: milking the public purse bone dry; gaining virtual free brand placement in the most public venues; having wars fought in their interests; and being FIRST IN LINE for corporate welfare bailouts (after THEY mess up) - blaming any budget shortfalls on the "impractical costs of social programs". This is not an economic dilemma. This is a social awareness problem. The sooner the public gets up to speed on the actual fiscal facts of government spending/corporate disbursements, the sooner a majority, that even Stephen Harper's conservatives won't be able to deny, will reclaim democracy in Canada!

You don't have to wait for the first Harper "majority" budget to know that health and prosperity have been reserved for the affluent - thanks to conservative priorities. The upcoming budget will do more to galvanize views already widely accepted by millions of Canadians - rather than do more FOR THEM.

Historically, many of the more sophisticated mechanisms to protect society as a whole, have been implemented after more than a single crisis. The first couple of crises are the wake-up calls to issues meriting public attention. And only when the public engages and steps forward to act with civic responsibility do the "missing pieces" of legislation rear their disappointing heads. Such may be the case with the Robocall scandal. Many Canadians were shocked to discover that MPs CANNOT be recalled through petitions. Additionally, even if Elections Canada concludes, after investigating, that the improprieties against the Elections Act have occurred, the courts may be the only remedy. Can Canadians afford to wait while Harper "opts" us into more global trade/environmental disasters?

In America, it was the banks holding the global economy over a barrel, "too big to fail", which resulted in the corporate pocketing of trillions of public funds with virtual immunity for criminal banking practices. Even though many former-conservative grannies and grandads have joined the ranks of the 99%, there still seems to be a disconnect (more like a chasm) about the perception of systemic governmental extra-judicial intrusion into our private goings ons. Of the many words which can be used to characterise "Canada's" prime minister, Stephen Harper, "dismissive" is one which seems to crop up more frequently than others. Stephen Harper's dismissive attitude about environmental concerns (in general, and as they apply to his tar sands projects). His dismissive attitude towards Canadian sovereignty as an inherent value of Canadians. His dismissive attitude towards local Canadian manufacturing economy. His dismissive attitude about populous movements, and now, his dismissive (if not classic arrogant) attitude about legitimate multiple concerns/complaints over crimes alleged to be perpetrated in the last Federal Election.

Some argue that the Conservatives view the governance of Canada as a game - to be won by any means possible (one-past-the-finishing-post election math, unprecedented proroguing of Parliament, and maybe Robocalls?). Western Canadians are well into the process of learning what it means to remain vigilant when impressing their will upon "their" government. The HST debacle in British Columbia is far from over.
